Quintana Roo, Mexico
Nikki and Rebecca met at a bar one night just before closing. Says Rebecca, “My friend pointed to this girl with long wavy locks wearing a fedora. Before I knew it my friend had pulled me across the bar to Nikki and said, “you’re cute,” then pointed at me and said, “you’re cute … you should talk.” To this day neither of us is sure what the other said. But we exchanged phone numbers, went on our first date, and confirmed the chemistry. The rest is history!”
Nikki proposed to Rebecca during a vacation in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Though they had discussed marriage, the final agreement seemed to be that the couple should wait and save up money, so Rebecca was surprised when the proposal happened. She says, “We were traveling with close friends and Nikki had one of the girls wear my ring throughout the airport to make sure it arrived safely. I never noticed.”
One night before dinner the couple took a walk on the beach before sunset. They sat on a bluff above the ocean when Nikki started talking to Rebecca seriously about their relationship before proposing in Spanish.
Rebecca: “I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, yes!’”
Though the couple looked into some local venues, they ultimately decided on a destination wedding in Mexico, at Dreams Puerto Aventuras Resort & Spa. Say the brides, “It’s an intimate resort, much smaller than many others, so we felt like we got to know the servers and bartenders and hosts and hostesses. They all recognized us and treated us like newlyweds. It was wonderful.”
Rebecca walked down the aisle with her father, and then Nikki walked with hers. The brides had a first dance to Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud.”
Brides’ Favorite Moments: “One of the highlights was the tequila bar. Our guests took a variety of tequila shots, including chocolate, almond, and fruit flavors, as well as reposados and an anejo. It sure helped our party get under way!”
Asked if there’s anything they would change the brides say, “nothing.” They do suggest that other same-sex couples do their research before planning a wedding to ensure they are surrounded by open-minded people on their special day. They add, “We highly recommend doing a destination wedding. Having a wedding planner to work with, and a variety of options helped us make decisions beforehand so that when the day came everything was taken care of. All we had to do was show up and take in the ocean breeze.”
“So honey now Take me into your loving arms Kiss me under the light of a thousand stars Place your head on my beating heart I’m thinking out loud Maybe we found love right where we are.”
