Prince Edward Island
Emily and Sumara met at the University of Prince Edward Island in Canada, where Emily played basketball and Sumara played rugby. The two had many mutual friends and eventually began dating after Sumara’s first year of pharmacy school at Dalhousie University in Halifax, when they were both working at Peakes Quay Restaurant and Bar in Charlottetown for the summer. From there they embarked on a long distance relationship while Sumara finished school and Emily worked as a developmental worker in PEI. Sumara proposed to Emily at a Bed & Breakfast during a weekend trip in November 2015.
The brides planned an intimate wedding at Emily’s sister’s house, which is on over 35 acres of land. They held a reception at the PEI Brewing Company.
Both brides were escorted by their parents. Emily volunteered to go first. Their processional song was Blackbird by The Beatles, performed without vocals by Runaway Dawson. Emily is the youngest of six and Sumara is one of seven, so the brides say that not only do they have big families, but that their families “helped with literally everything.” Emily’s sister hosted the wedding and did a reading during the ceremony, a brother-in-law made the arch they stood beneath during the ceremony, and a sister-in-law made the cupcakes and centerpieces. Sumara’s brother emceed the wedding and one of her sister’s officiated.
Wedding Song: The brides had a first dance to “Four Leaf Clover” by Christian Hudson.
Say the brides, “We heard the song on the radio and absolutely fell in love with it.”
Emily and Sumara say that the day went perfectly. “Every little detail was better than we ever thought possible. Our first look was definitely one of our favorite moments. Getting that time together to see each other for the first time in our dresses was pretty special.”
The brides wanted a laidback and fun-filled day with their loved ones, and say this is exactly what they got. “It really was the best day of our lives.” Despite a few mosquitos during the ceremony, the couple say the weather was perfect and their photographers did an amazing job of wrangling their large families. Later, the dance floor was packed all night and that everyone partied until the lights came on.
